Why take this workshop: This is a fantastic workshop that will really help connect you to the music. It will increase your dancing skills, and provide you with insights that very few people have. Most of all - it will be fun, educational, and make a real impact on the dance floor. You'll learn and explore the connections between Salsa dance styles and the fascinating rhythms which accompany them. Led by Afro-Caribbean pianist, composer and recording artist Rebeca Mauleón, this workshop will help salsa dancers of all levels better understand the nuances and complexities of Afro-Cuban and other rhythms at the heart of the salsa phenomenon with a step-by-step breakdown of important patterns and rhythms (such as the "clave") and the various percussion rhythms.
Open to dancers of all levels - as well as musicians - interested in truly understanding the relationship between popular Latin music and dance, this workshop will teach participants the correlation between various popular rhythms and the dance steps that go with them. Participants will listen to as well as play assorted rhythms and instruments, then demonstrate new-found knowledge by dancing to hot recorded music! Some percussion instruments will be provided, but feel free to bring your own; claves, maracas, guiros and other small percussion are ideal.
Rhythms and dances covered include Cuban rumba, son, cha-cha-cha, conga and guaracha, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, and Dominican merengue.
No
musical experience is required!
