This weekend Kimballs will be celebrating El Dia de
San Juan. The event celebrates the culture and customs of Puerto Rico with
Latin Music and cuisine. In Puerto Rico, the celebration culminates
at midnight during Fiesta Playera Dia De San Juan Bautista when the people
of the island participate in a traditional backward midnight walk into the
ocean, symbolic of cleansing the spirit for the next year. In honor
of this celebration Kimball's presents Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo
Sound--one of Puerto Rico's most renowned bands. Roberto Roena began his career at the age of twelve with his brother Cuqui. They competed in a television show where they won first place. He later worked with Ismael Rivera on the television show " El Show de Cortijo y su Combo". The unforgettable Cortijo saw the interest of Roberto and gave him an opportunity to become a member of the Orchestra de Cortijo y su Combo. Later Roberto helped organize and played percussion with one of the most popular orchestras in Puerto Rico " El Gran Combo". Finally in 1969 Roberto formed his El Apollo Sound. In the seventies Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound traveled all over the world, as one of the original members of the Fania All Stars with such names as Ruben Blades, Frankie Calderon, Tito Cruz, Adalberto Santiago, Johnny Pacheco, Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Ray Barretto, Ismael Miranda, Hector LaVoe, and the legendary Celia Cruz. And now again direct from Puerto Rico With a new CD, Roberto Roena and the voices Tempo Alomar and Luisito Carrion will attract young and old to the sounds of SALSA!!!
