What
more could we expect from an L.A. dance company than a combination of
excitement, energy and theatricality. We saw all of this wrapped up in
one...or should I say six? Yes, six amazingly beautiful women performing a
combination of Afro-Cuban, Hip-Hop and Salsa in two routines.
The first routine of the night had the three of the women dressed in drag, in
white shirts and pants, as the leaders, while the other three performed the role
of the follower dressed in very sexy blue costumes that showed off their
feminine lines. This routine had the Afro-Cuban flavor combined with a
high-energy salsa routine in the end. The second and closing routine had all the
dancers dressed in battle gear, complete with tank tops and machine guns as
props. This performance was very hip-hop oriented and full of energy!
After the performances, the girls had the audience participate as a human
chain/tunnel in a "follow the leader" game. Now, I wonder, how
did they get those machine gun props past airline security (unless they weren't
flying)?
There was some pretty good social dancing, including Olivia Dasso (one of the Yemaya members) displaying some of her West Coast Swing skills for one song. We had some well-rounded dance talent, indeed!
It seems that everyone stayed pretty late, even the performers who had to conduct an all-day workshop the following day! Thanks to Ricardo & Michelle of Pretty Boys & Girls Productions for bringing Yemaya to the Bay Area, as well as to all of those involved in the Hot Salsa Friday events!
